Lace wigs sit best when the lace is prepped and secured properly. Allow 20 to 30 minutes the first time.

1. Prep your hair. Braid or flat-twist your hair flat, then pull on a wig cap.
2. Position the wig. Place the front lace at your natural hairline and the back on your nape, then centre it.
3. Secure it. Fasten the combs and adjustable strap inside the cap. For extra hold, use a wig grip band or lace adhesive made for skin.
4. Trim the lace. Cut the lace along your hairline in small steps, staying in front of your ears. Never cut inside the hairline.
5. Blend the hairline. Dab foundation or powder on the lace so it matches your skin tone, and tidy the edges.
6. Style it. Brush from the ends upward and style as you like. Curl, straighten and colour only if you keep heat under 180 degrees.

Look after a human hair wig and it will last far longer. Treat it like your own hair.

• Wash every 8 to 10 wears. Use a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner in lukewarm water, and rinse from top to ends.
• Detangle gently. Use a wide-tooth comb or soft brush, working from the ends up to the roots. Never comb wet hair roughly.
• Dry naturally. Let it air-dry on a wig stand or mannequin head. Do not wring or rub it with a towel.
• Heat with care. Use a heat protectant and keep tools at or below 180 degrees.
• Moisturise. Apply a light leave-in conditioner or hair oil to the ends once a week.
• Store it right. Keep it on a stand, or loosely in a bag with a silk or satin bonnet. Keep it away from sun and heat.
• Skip the extras. Do not sleep, swim or shower in your wig, and keep it away from open flames.
